Varanasi: For those whose sleep is repeatedly interrupted by breathing difficulties, relief may now come through an indigenous innovation from Banaras Hindu University. A specially designed device to manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a disorder that causes repeated blockage of the upper airway during sleep, has been granted a patent under the Indian Patent Act.The device was developed by Vipul Sharma, T P Chaturvedi and H C Baranwal of BHU, marking a significant achievement in dental and sleep medicine.Chaturvedi said dental sleep medicine is an emerging branch of dentistry that enables doctors to treat patients suffering from snoring and breathing problems caused by jaw abnormalities.OSA is a sleep-related breathing disorder in which the upper airway becomes partially or completely blocked repeatedly during sleep. The patented device offers a non-surgical approach to managing the condition through a controlled and adjustable mechanism that gradually advances the mandible, or lower jaw. This helps widen the upper airway, improve airflow during sleep, reduce obstruction, and support better breathing and sleep quality.Sharma said the device offers a promising, patient-friendly and non-invasive treatment option for eligible individuals suffering from OSA. Its adjustable design allows controlled mandibular advancement according to each patient’s specific needs. The patent reflects the inventors’ commitment to interdisciplinary research, technological innovation and the development of clinically relevant solutions to improve patient care. It also highlights the potential of indigenous innovation in addressing an important public health concern.
